Pedroia likely back after All-Star Game

BOSTON -- Dustin Pedroia was eligible to be activated on Friday night against the Yankees, but he still needs more time. The Red Sox appear to be choosing a more conservative path that would have the second baseman return after the All-Star break.

"I don't have an exact percentage of the intensity, but today was the first day he has run the bases," said manager John Farrell. "Baseball activity continues to improve. Not active today. Obviously we're getting to that point [of] what's the risk-reward with the potential for additional days of recovery. No roster moves today."

Pedroia is recovering from a right hamstring strain.

"Obviously it's not a chronic thing, but there was a pretty substantial injury at the time and we're going based on the guidance of the medical staff," said Farrell.

Pedroia won't go on a Minor League rehab assignment this weekend.

"And after the break, we haven't' even approached that yet. We're looking at Pedey's health and well-being first," Farrell said. "He'll be on the field as soon as he's available."

All-Star Brock Holt has been a steadying presence at second in Pedroia's absence.
