Reed leading eight Astros slated for AFL

HOUSTON -- A.J. Reed will be playing baseball in October, but not with the Astros.

Reed, who leads the Minor Leagues in home runs (33), RBIs (119), runs (109) and OPS (1.067), joins outfielder Derek Fisher and third baseman J.D. Davis to headline the group of players the Astros will send to the Arizona Fall League. Reed is the Astros' fifth-ranked prospect, Fisher is eighth and Davis is 12th.

Joining them on the roster for the Glendale Desert Dogs are right-handers Chris Cotton, Albert Minnis, Aaron West and Keegan Yuhl, and infielder Chan Jong Moon, who will be on the taxi squad, meaning he's active on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The Desert Dogs will include prospects from the Dodgers, Phillies, Pirates, Astros and White Sox, and they will play home games at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz. The league runs Oct. 13-Nov. 21, with all organizations sending players to fill the six teams.

Reed, the reigning Texas League Player of the Week, was named the California League Most Valuable Player earlier this season while at Class A Advanced Lancaster. Fisher, the No. 37 overall pick in the 2014 Draft, entered Monday hitting .274 with a .362 on-base percentage, 21 homers and 84 RBIs combined at Class A Quad Cities and Lancaster. Davis, taken in the third round in 2014, was hitting .293 with a .373 on-base percentage, 26 homers and 100 RBIs at Lancaster.
