Ellis injured during no-no celebration

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers starting catcher A.J. Ellis went on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a sprained right ankle he suffered during the on-field celebration of Josh Beckett's no-hitter Sunday in Philadelphia.

"I approached the dogpile, jumped and landed on Drew Butera's discarded mask," said Ellis, who didn't catch Beckett's gem. "It's a pretty severely sprained right ankle. I rolled it over pretty good.

"I knew right away it was bad. I had treatment on the flight back. I called [trainer] Stan [Conte] this morning and told him I couldn't play for the next few days. I told him it was best for the club to get a catcher [Tim Federowicz, recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque] up here."

Ellis was on the DL earlier this season because of left knee surgery, missing 34 games. He was activated May 14. Ellis obviously didn't want to land on the DL again, but he agreed with the move, because the Dodgers already have walking wounded in shortstop Hanley Ramirez (calf), who hasn't started since Thursday, but likely isn't going on the DL.

"It's the right decision for the team," Ellis said. "Hanley's on the mend. I can't put [manager] Don [Mattingly] in a postion where he only has players who can't play on the bench."

Butera started again Monday against the Reds. Mattingly said he would alternate between Butera and Federowicz depending on matchups, as he did during Ellis' knee injury.

"I know he feels terrible [about the way it happened]," Mattingly said. "We'll get through it."

Mattingly also said Ramirez is getting closer to a return.

"Hopefully, just one more day," the manager said. "As of right now, he's feeling better. I think he's going to see the doctor today. We'll see."
