Hamstring injury puts Hernandez on DL

LOS ANGELES -- Kiké Hernandez, who left in the eighth inning of the Dodgers' loss to the Cubs on Sunday, has a strained hamstring, manager Don Mattingly said, and the Dodgers placed Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list before Monday's game vs. the Giants.

Mattingly said the injury is about the same severity as injuries to Howie Kendrick and Yasiel Puig. Kendrick has been on the disabled list since Aug. 10 while Puig has been out since Friday.

Mattingly didn't believe any of the injuries were connected.

"I've been involved in a lot of teams over the years. One year, it's the obliques, one year, it's something else. This year we've had some hamstrings," Mattingly said. "At that point, everyone evaluates what we're doing and how we're doing it."

With Hernandez out of the lineup, Joc Pederson will regain his starting position in center field and Jose Peraza will be Chase Utley's backup at second base. Mattingly also said Peraza has played center field in the past and could see time in center, depending on the matchup.

Kendrick has continued to see his progress stymied in recent days as he's unable to run full speed, which has put a halt to his return.

"I can't say a lot of progress. Still a lot of running but not able to get over the hump yet," Mattingly said. "We're not at the point where we're ready to play a game. We're still trying to get to that point where Howie is comfortable going full speed."

Puig has been doing work on the treadmill and in the water as part of his rehab, according to Mattingly.

"He's doing his work. The hamstrings, we've seen enough of them, they're going to take some time," Mattingly said.
