Everth back after night off to rest sore knee

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres got a scare late Monday when shortstop Everth Cabrera tweaked his right knee in a victory over the Rockies.

Cabrera was a late scratch Tuesday with soreness in the knee, which even he said scared him a little bit.

But Cabrera, who has been the team's most productive offensive player, was back in the lineup for the third meeting of a four-game series against the Rockies.

"It was good to get his name in the lineup again," said Padres manager Bud Black.

Cabrera suffered the injury when he made a spectacular catch of a Carlos Gonzalez line drive Monday, though it wasn't on the catch. It was when Cabrera quickly scrambled to his feet and planted for a throw to first base as he attempted to double up the baserunner, Charlie Blackmon.

"We said it was day to day, and we felt as though he's good enough to go," Black said. "It's still a little sore but he's playable."

Alexi Amarista got the start at shortstop in Cabrera's absence Tuesday.

Going into Wednesday's game, Cabrera leads the team in hits (18), doubles (six), runs (seven) and batting average (.340).
