Extra bases

• When Junior Lake was called up from Triple-A Iowa, Cubs manager Dale Sveum considered having him lead off until the outfielder said he was going to swing at the first pitch.

"I said, 'Today, for real, you're leading off,' and he just smiled," Sveum said Monday.

Lake did lead off for the Cubs, and he did swing at the first pitch, grounding out to shortstop.

• The Cubs acquired third baseman Mike Olt from the Rangers in the Matt Garza deal, and he will go to Triple-A Iowa. What does that mean for Josh Vitters, who just returned from the disabled list and had been playing third? Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said Olt will get the majority of playing time at third, while Vitters can play outfield.

• Outfielder David DeJesus, rehabbing from a sprained right shoulder, was 1-for-4 with a double and struck out twice on Sunday for the Cubs' Rookie League team. If all goes well, DeJesus could be activated by the end of the week.

Third baseman Kris Bryant, the Cubs' No. 1 pick in the June Draft, made his pro debut on Sunday with the Rookie League team, and was 0-for-3 and made three errors (two throwing, one fielding) but also made a nice catch in the second.
