• Elliot Johnson recently signed a Minor League deal with the Indians that included an invite to Spring Training.

"I think it's a good opportunity for me," said Johnson, who hopes to earn a spot coming off the Indians' bench. The former Rays utility man played five positions in 2013 while with the Royals and Braves. As a member of the Royals last season, he hit .435 with two home runs and five RBIs in six games against the Rays.

• Carlos Pena is another former Rays favorite looking to earn a roster spot this year. After spending 2013 with the Astros and Royals, he has signed a Minor League deal with the Angels, complete with an invite to Spring Training. Pena is coming off a down season that saw him hit .207 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs.

"I think the more I looked for answers, the further I got away from the truth," Pena said of his struggles. The Angels will be looking at Pena as a candidate to play some first base and serve as a designated hitter and pinch-hitter.

• Sam Fuld is still a free agent, but the former Rays outfielder remains loyal to the Tampa Bay area. This weekend, he will hold his annual Diabetes Sports Camp for kids 8-17 at the University of South Florida. Fuld, who has Type I diabetes, will be hosting the event for a third straight year.
