First rehab game for Stanton, maybe last for Eovaldi

PHILADELPHIA -- The Marlins may be close to getting their most feared offensive weapon back.

Giancarlo Stanton began playing in rehab-assignment games Tuesday for Class A Jupiter.

The 23-year-old has been on the disabled list since April 30 with a strained right hamstring.

Jupiter played a doubleheader on Tuesday, and Stanton started in right field in the first game, going 0-for-3 before leaving in the sixth. The outfielder did not start the nightcap.

The Marlins are hopeful Stanton and first baseman Logan Morrison, who is playing in rehab-assignment games at Double-A Jacksonville, will return sometime in another week or so.

"These guys are going to be a big boost and energy lift for us," manager Mike Redmond said. "In Spring Training, we talked about having a team together, and we haven't even come close to having that team together the whole year."

The rotation also could be getting a lift as Nathan Eovaldi could be back in a week.

Eovaldi, recovering from right shoulder inflammation, made his third rehab start -- and first for Jacksonville -- on Tuesday night. Eovaldi gave up three runs in the first inning before settling down and finishing with four runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings

Barring a setback, Eovaldi's next start could be with the Marlins.
