Flores may be headed for disabled list

LOS ANGELES -- What initially seemed to be a minor injury has developed into something more serious for Mets third baseman Wilmer Flores, who may land on the disabled list with a twisted right ankle.

"It's pretty stiff," manager Terry Collins said Tuesday afternoon. "In this world we live in, there's always the possibility of the DL. We certainly won't know anything for a day or so."

Flores injured his leg running from first to third in the second inning on Monday. Mets trainer Ray Ramirez taped the ankle between innings, allowing Flores to finish the game, but the third baseman was walking around afterward with a pronounced limp. Eyewitnesses said he was still limping heavily as he exited the team bus Tuesday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Flores, who was receiving treatment, was unavailable for comment.

"I think the fact that he was taped up might have kept [his ankle] a little bit intact," Collins said of Flores, who is batting .259 with nine RBIs over the first seven games of his big league career. "But after the game he was very, very uncomfortable. And today he was even worse than last night."

Should Flores require a DL stint, both Justin Turner -- who started Tuesday -- and Josh Satin are capable of playing third base. The Mets could also call upon Zach Lutz, the everyday third baseman at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Regular starter David Wright is on the DL with a strained right hamstring and may not return this season.
