Springer feeling good after third rehab game

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Astros outfielder George Springer continued his rehab assignment Tuesday with the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks, for whom he has been a model of consistency.

For the fourth time in as many appearances this season in the league where he was the 2013 Player of the Year, Springer went 1-for-4 with a run in Tuesday's 10-2 win over Frisco (Rangers), the Hooks' franchise-record 84th win of the season.

Leading off and playing right field, Springer lined the first pitch he saw from Jose Leclerc past the glove of third baseman Luis Mendez, then hustled to second to beat the throw from left fielder Zach Cone before later scoring the first run of the game.

"I'm excited to be getting some everyday reps, and it's been a good stay so far," said the 2011 first-round Draft pick (11th overall) out of Connecticut.

Springer pushed an outside curve back to Leclerc in the second inning, walked on four pitches from southpaw reliever Chad James to lead off the third, then struck out swinging on a pair of 1-2 counts in the fifth and sixth innings before taking a seat in the eighth.

"For the first time in a long time, I was swinging that hard, and it felt good and I bounced back great today, so I'm looking forward to getting out there again," the 25-year-old Springer said.

Houston manager A.J. Hinch said early Tuesday that Springer would take Wednesday off and DH on Thursday.

Springer was batting .264 with 43 runs, 14 doubles, 13 home runs and 29 RBIs in 75 games for Houston before fracturing his wrist when he was hit by a pitch from Kansas City's Edinson Volquez on July 1 at Minute Maid Park.

Springer is 3-for-12 with three runs and four strikeouts after three games of his current assignment. He also made a rehab appearance for Corpus Christi on May 12 while recovering from a concussion, going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in San Antonio (Padres).
