Connecticut native Springer savors win in NY

NEW YORK -- Astros outfielder George Springer grew up in Connecticut as a Red Sox fan, which means he was predisposed to rooting against the Yankees.

When asked if knocking New York out of the playoffs with Tuesday night's 3-0 win in the American League Wild Game presented by Budweiser gave him some extra satisfaction, Springer didn't take the bait.

"I'm a Houston Astro now," he said. "I'm happy."

Springer had a throng of friends and family at Yankee Stadium, including his parents. It was the first Major League game he had played at the Stadium because Springer was injured last year, and this season when the Astros came to the Bronx. He's still yet to play at Fenway Park, missing both series there the past two years with injuries.

"That's probably the all-time high for every player, especially in the playoffs," Springer said of playing at Yankee Stadium.

Springer went 1-for-4 with a double and made a long running catch into the right-field corner in the fourth inning to rob Alex Rodriguez of a hit.

"I had to stay controlled and play for the team and do anything I can to help us win," Springer said.
