Giants -- and fan -- nominated for GIBBY Awards

Tim Lincecum's no-hitter and sure-handed spectator at AT&T Park up for honors

SAN FRANCISCO -- A subpar 2013 season befell the Giants, but you wouldn't know it from the GIBBY nominations they received.

The Giants were well-represented among the GIBBY Awards finalists despite the club's first sub-.500 finish since 2008.

Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2013 GIBBY trophies -- the ultimate honors of the industry's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.

This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 22 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic, regular-season moment and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.

In the past five years, fans have cast more than 50 million votes across the various GIBBY categories, none of which was restricted to individual League affiliation. Fan voting runs through Dec. 1.

Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.

Five Giants are under GIBBY consideration. Tim Lincecum's July 13 no-hitter at San Diego resulted in a pair of nominations -- Lincecum himself for top pitching performance by delivering a 148-pitch, 13-strikeout effort, and right fielder Hunter Pence for top play by making his sprawling eighth-inning catch of Alexi Amarista's sinking line drive that preserved Lincecum's gem.

Yusmeiro Petit received a top pitching performance nomination for his near-perfect game against Arizona on Sept. 6, an effort that was spoiled by pinch-hitter Eric Chavez's two-out, ninth-inning single.

Left-hander Madison Bumgarner's consistency earned him a top starting pitcher nomination. The 24-year-old led the Giants in wins (13) despite receiving 3.53 runs of support per game -- the lowest average on the team's staff. He also paced the club in innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and opponents' batting average.

Center fielder Angel Pagan's left hamstring injury limited him to 71 games, but he played enough to garner a nomination for top walk-off moment. His two-run, inside-the-park homer defeated Colorado on May 25.

A sure-handed AT&T Park spectator who snared a foul ball with his right hand while holding his infant child in his left arm was recognized for his difficult catch with a nomination for best Cut4 moment.
