Giants finished shopping for starting pitchers

SAN FRANCISCO -- Don't expect the Giants to pluck a starting pitcher from the bunch of remaining free agents.

"We're at our limit," general manager Brian Sabean said Friday, "and we're fine with it."

That limit extends from the roster to the payroll. The Giants spent $82 million to sign free agents Tim Lincecum, Tim Hudson, Javier Lopez, Ryan Vogelsong and Michael Morse. They also have a full contingent of starting pitchers, besides aspiring candidates such as Yusmeiro Petit and David Huff. The likes of Bronson Arroyo, A.J. Burnett and Ubaldo Jimenez will have to look elsewhere.

That reflected the Giants' implicit faith in Vogelsong, who finished 4-6 with a 5.73 ERA in 2013 after making the National League All-Star team in 2011 and leading the club with three postseason victories in 2012.

"I think one of the reasons I've had success here is because I know they trust me, and that was something I never had anywhere else," Vogelsong said. "I know that Rags [pitching coach Dave Righetti] trusts me, I know that Boch [manager Bruce Bochy] trusts me and I know that Sabes trusts me. That does a lot for your confidence as a player. It makes it a lot easier to perform when you know you have support from the people who make decisions."
