Giants first-rounder Arroyo hits first homer
Christian Arroyo, the Giants' first-round selection in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, hit his first home run of the season on Friday, but Class A Augusta lost at Delmarva, 6-4.
Arroyo, the Giants' No. 5 prospect, led off the game with a home run to left field against right-hander Sebastian Vader. He finished the night 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Giants selected Arroyo with the 25th overall pick in last year's Draft. He hit .326 and led the Arizona League in runs (47), RBIs (39) and slugging percentage (.511) in 45 games after signing. He hasn't replicated that success in his first full professional season, however. He is hitting .207 with a .505 OPS in 30 games this year.
Arroyo doesn't turn 19 until May 30, making him one of the youngest players in the South Atlantic League. He was a shortstop in high school, but he has mostly played second base this season. Ryder Jones, the Giants' 2013 second-round pick, has served as Augusta's primary shortstop.
Jones, the Giants' No. 15 prospect, went 3-for-4 with a run and a walk on Friday. He is hitting .267 with a .653 OPS in 31 games this season.
