Lopez checks in with Boston players

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants left-hander Javier Lopez, who pitched for the Boston Red Sox from 2006-09, reached out to former teammates to ease his mind after Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Lopez said Friday that he contacted Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and Joel Hanrahan, an ex-Pittsburgh teammate now playing for Boston, to check on them and their families in the wake of the mayhem.

"Everybody's good," Lopez said, noting that several players lived close to the crime scene. "I think it might be more of a psychological check for myself. ... When you can't control anything, you try to at least ease any pain that people might have."

Lopez said that he got an "eerie" feeling from watching television reports, since he's familiar with the area surrounding the blasts.

"It's a tough time," he said. But, he added, "It's a tough city. It's a resilient city."
