Giants leaning toward Vogelsong or Petit to start

SAN FRANCISCO -- After further contemplation, Giants manager Bruce Bochy opted for the conventional solution and likely will name either Ryan Vogelsong or Yusmeiro Petit to fill in for Jake Peavy in the starting rotation.

"That's the way we're leaning," Bochy said Sunday.

When Peavy went on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained lower back, Bochy mentioned the possibility of employing a four-man rotation, which would have been possible due to Monday's scheduled off-day. But that would have offered only a brief solution, since the Giants would have needed a fifth starter next Saturday at Colorado.

Vogelsong, unofficially considered San Francisco's top emergency starter, filled in for an ailing Peavy on April 7 at Arizona and absorbed the decision in the Giants' 7-6 loss. Petit, regarded as the club's primary long reliever, had logged 7 1/3 innings in five appearances entering Sunday.

• Acknowledging the Giants' upcoming matchups, which will pit them against Dodgers left-handers Brett Anderson on Tuesday and Clayton Kershaw on Wednesday, Bochy emphasized the need to keep right-handed batters such as catcher Buster Posey and third baseman Casey McGehee in the lineup. "We have to get some guys going," Bochy said.

• Bochy intends to take time in his off-day Monday to drop by AT&T Park, since that's when members of the club's front office will receive their 2014 World Series rings. "That's going to be a special day, too," he said.
