Girardi attributes Soriano's rocky ninth to workload

NEW YORK -- Rafael Soriano's heavy recent workload might have something to do with the flat home run pitch he served up in the Yankees' 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Athletics on Friday, manager Joe Girardi said.

Soriano allowed a game-tying, pinch-hit homer to Oakland's Brandon Moss in the ninth inning, and Girardi said that using Soriano in both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep over the Blue Jays might have had an effect.

"His arm was maybe a little dead today. I wasn't sure what we were going to get from him," Girardi said, adding that he also had concerns about David Robertson and Boone Logan. "I give Sori a lot of credit. He ended up getting out of that [ninth] inning and gave us a chance to win the game."

Girardi said that he didn't consider Soriano's situation to be an injury, but noted that the right-hander has been worked often this season. Friday marked just Soriano's fourth blown save in 46 chances this season.

"I talked to [Girardi]," Soriano said. "It's a little bit sore, like normal sore. I tried to make a good pitch. That happened. I'll come back tomorrow. ... I'm not tired. No excuses. I made one pitch and that's it."
