Gomez scratched from lineup prior to game

CHICAGO -- Brewers leadoff man Carlos Gomez was scratched from Saturday's starting lineup with lower back tightness approximately 40 minutes before the first pitch. Gomez first experienced the tightness Tuesday against Pittsburgh, when he was removed from the game after six innings.

Gomez just finished serving his three-game suspension for his role in the Gerrit Cole incident, but his status for Saturday remained up in the air. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke sounded confident before Satuday's game that Gomez would be fine, but he did say his All-Star center fielder's health was at less than 100 percent.

"Gomey's such a violent swinger and player. If he tells me he feels really good, he's going to play. But if he's a little hesitant, I don't think it's probably smart to put him out there."

Ryan Braun returned following a scheduled day off Friday as he works his way back from an oblique injury. Roenicke pulled him after six innings of his first game off the DL on Tuesday to help ease him back in, but the manager said he doesn't anticipate needing to limit Braun moving forward.

"I plan to not worry about him anymore," Roenicke said. "If we get to a point when a double switch makes sense, I think I'll do it. I don't think I'll just pull him out. If I pull him out, its because something is going on."
