Gonzalez leaves park, attends daughter's birth

DETROIT-- Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez left the team prior to Monday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers in Detroit to catch a flight to Southern California for the birth of his daughter with wife Lucia.

Leah Gonzalez, born Monday night, is the couple's first child.

Gonzalez, who picked up the win in the Orioles' 6-3 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday, is expected to be placed on paternity leave, although that hasn't officially happened yet -- and manager Buck Showalter said following Monday's game that it's not definite.

The right-hander could theoretically not miss a start, particularly with Thursday's off-day, but the Orioles would still be afforded the luxury of having an extra player anywhere from 1-3 days if Gonzalez is on paternity leave.
