Hanley throws to bases, nearing return

BALTIMORE -- Hanley Ramirez recently made another step in his goal of playing first base when he started throwing to bases. However, there's still no timetable on when Ramirez will be activated from the disabled list as he continues to regain strength in his ailing right shoulder.

With three weeks left in the season, do the Red Sox have a target date for getting Ramirez back in the lineup?

"No, there's no one given day," said interim manager Torey Lovullo. "It's a day-to-day thing with him with the feedback we're getting from him, the medical team. We don't want to put him in a situation where he's not ready for a couple of different reasons. One of them is his health and the other one is his comfort level. Piece by piece, it's getting better."

Ramirez last played on Aug. 26. However, he has continued to work almost daily at first base.

"He feels good," Lovullo said. "The footwork is coming along. It's an overall feel from all of us to make sure that it's the right time and the right situation to keep pushing him forward. Today he'll take more ground balls so he'll be able to throw a little bit more, and he's been taking BP and everything is looking very good."
