Labrum surgery successful for Alvarez

MIAMI -- Marlins righty Henderson Alvarez -- who is out for the remainder of the season -- underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn right labrum.

The surgery, which was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., was a debridement procedure to remove debris and damaged tissue in the shoulder joint.

"The surgery was a success and everything that is being reported is that it was very successful," manager Dan Jennings said prior to Wednesday's contest against the Nationals.

While Jennings added that the recovery timetable is "to be determined," the Marlins are hopeful that the 2014 All-Star will be ready for Spring Training 2016. As of Wednesday afternoon, the 25-year-old was headed back to Miami from Pensacola.

Alvarez's frustrating season ended at 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA after being the Marlins' Opening Day starter. He made two stints on the disabled list, and was shut down after experiencing discomfort during his second stint that began on July 15.
