Heralded Oberste selected by Mets

As a senior at Sallisaw (Okla.) High School in 2010, first baseman Matt Oberste was named Male Athlete of the Year by the state coaches association. He excelled in three sports in high school but received no Division I scholarship offers, and instead went to Connors State Junior College to play baseball.

Oberste went undrafted in 2011 and moved on to Oklahoma, where he set a school record with a 30-game hitting streak this season. He makes consistent contact and has solid power in his 6-foot-2, 209-pound frame.

He remains athletic enough to play the outfield, but arm injuries likely will limit him to first base as a professional.
