Hohokam Stadium and Lew Wolff Training Complex Win Architectural Award

OAKLAND, Calif. - Last year's renovations at Hohokam Stadium and the Lew Wolff Training Complex in Mesa, Ariz.-the new spring training homes of the Oakland A's-have earned the design team the prestigious Goodwin Award at Saturday's 57th Annual AIA Arizona Celebrate Architecture Awards.

The multi-venue renovation effort commenced in late 2013 and was completed in time for the A's first 2015 spring training workout on Feb. 20, 2015, and came in $1.5 million under its original $26.9 million budget. The City of Mesa owns the venues, while the A's are the tenant and partnered on the design strategy. Gensler served as the architect while W.E. O'Neil was the general contractor.
 
The Goodwin Award honors the collaborative efforts of the architect, contractor and owner of a project that embodies design excellence, exhibits outstanding craftsmanship, and exemplifies teamwork, resulting in a project that serves the owner's mission functionally, financially and aesthetically.
 
"We're especially proud of this award as it recognizes the collaborative efforts that made this project a reality," said A's President Michael Crowley. "The City of Mesa, Gensler, W.E. O'Neil, and our team in Mesa worked together to finish this remodel on time and under budget. We couldn't be happier with the finished product."
 
At the Lew Wolff Training Complex, more than 25,000 square feet were added to its main building, bringing the total square footage of the building to 55,433. The exterior and interior were updated to reflect the character and identity of the Oakland Athletics, and other renovations include expanded player therapy and strength training areas and a complete rebuild of the baseball fields, batting cages, pitching mounds and overall grounds.
 
At Hohokam Stadium, the team expanded the home clubhouse, kitchen, and weight room, which accounted for a portion of the more than 70,000 square feet of renovation space. The remodel also included the installation of a new 55' x 28' high-definition LED videoboard, which is the largest in the Cactus League.
 
In 2015, the A's first year playing at Hohokam, the club saw a 56% increase in attendance over the previous spring season.
