Holt called up to provide depth at third base

ANAHEIM -- The Red Sox, feeling the need for a left-handed bat to platoon with Brandon Snyder at third base, recalled Brock Holt from Triple-A Pawtucket for Saturday's game.

Holt and Snyder will hold down third base for Boston while Jose Iglesias plays shortstop until Stephen Drew returns from the disabled list. With Angels right-hander Jerome Williams on the mound, Holt made the start on Saturday.

"Anytime you can get up here, that's everyone's goal," said Holt, who picked up an RBI in the second inning with a sacrifice fly. "Watching these guys the whole year, it's been fun to watch and I'm excited to be a part of it for however long it may be."

Holt was acquired by the Red Sox along with closer Joel Hanrahan in a trade with the Pirates back in December.

Last year, Holt played in 24 games with Pittsburgh, hitting .292 with no homers and three RBIs in 65 at-bats.

To make room for Holt on the roster, the Red Sox sent Jonathan Diaz back to Pawtucket. Like Diaz, Holt can play second, short and third.

"At the time we purchased Diaz's contract, Holt was still dealing with the oblique injury, so he wasn't physically ready to come, and he was able to get the last three games in Pawtucket in preparation for coming back here," said manager John Farrell. "Just the stretch of right-handed starters we're going to go through here, that added left-handed bat on the infield is what we're looking at."
