ICYMI: Extra-inning rally too much for Friars

Typically, when James Shields pitches seven innings of one-run baseball and leaves the game with a lead, the chances are good he'll be rewarded with a "W" after handing the game over to the reliable Padres' bullpen. This was not the case on Sunday, however, as the Dodgers were able to rally late in the game in the 12th inning, walking out of Petco Park with a 4-2 victory and avoiding a series loss in San Diego for the first time since August 2014. On the bright side, Shields' record remained perfect at 7-0, and he lowered his ERA down to 3.59.

The Padres were poised to win after taking a 2-1 lead over the Dodgers into the eighth inning on Sunday, but a two-out rally by Los Angeles against reliever Joaquin Benoit would tie the game at 2 and eventually push the game into extra frames. The Friars outhit their NL West opponents after eight of the nine starting players in the Padres' lineup recorded a hit -- including Shields, who went 1-for-2 with a single and run. Will Venable, Matt Kemp and Alexi Amarista all enjoyed multihit games, while outfielder Justin Upton collected his 40th and 41st RBIs of the season. Upton became the first player on the Padres' roster to collect at least 40 RBIs on the year.

The series loss to the Dodgers is the first the Padres have endured since before they took two out of three against the Angels on May 27.
