ICYMI: Venable clutch, Ninja delivers in extras

Fans were treated to quite the pitchers' duel at AT&T Park on Tuesday as Odrisamer Despaigne faced off against Madison Bumgarner. Neither pitcher factored into the final decision of the game, though Bumgarner was certainly in top form as he struck out 14 Padres. But scrappy San Diego went on to a 3-2 victory over the Giants in an 11-inning affair.

Despaigne, who entered the series opener with a career 2-0 record and a 0.36 ERA against the Giants, celebrate the anniversary of his Major League debut by delivering five innings of two-run baseball after surrendering only five hits and striking out two. The Padres appeared befuddled by Bumgarner early on, but a two-run double by Will Venable in the eighth inning off of the ace tied the game and set the stage for extras. Venable's knock came on the heels of manager Pat Murphy's ejection from the game over a controversial Clint Barmes strikeout. Matt Kemp was also ejected from the game after arguing from the dugout.

San Diego stayed tough until the 11th inning, when Alexi Amarista -- who entered the game to play center field following Kemp's ejection -- dug in and delivered at the plate after three straight base hits to plate Derek Norris for the go-ahead run. Will Middlebrooks enjoyed yet another multihit game on the road.
