Davis undergoes successful hip surgery

A's first baseman expected to be ready by Spring Training

PHOENIX -- A's first baseman Ike Davis underwent successful left hip surgery Thursday and is expected to be ready by Spring Training, according to Oakland trainer Nick Paparesta.

The arthroscopic procedure, which repaired a torn labrum, was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo. Davis remains there, resting comfortably, and is scheduled to return home Tuesday. Paparesta said he would begin therapy immediately.

Davis, who missed 33 games earlier this season with a strained left quad, was placed on the disabled list last week with a strained left hip -- a problem he believes might have been the result of overcompensating for the quad injury. He later underwent an MRI that revealed the labrum tear.

The 28-year-old Davis finished the 2015 season, his sixth in the big leagues, with a .229 average. He managed just three home runs and 20 RBIs and got on base at a .301 rate.

Davis, who earned $3.8 million this year, will enter his final offseason of arbitration eligibility, and there's a strong chance the A's non-tender him.
