Impressive first outing earns Beeler another shot

CINCINNATI -- In his Major League debut on June 28, Dallas Beeler held the Nationals to one unearned run on four hits over six innings, impressing Cubs manager Rick Renteria.

Beeler will get another start Wednesday against the Reds, filling one of the vacancies created by Saturday's trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Athletics. Kyle Hendricks, a highly touted right-hander whom the Cubs acquired from the Rangers in July 2012, will make his Major League debut Thursday.

Beeler struck out six in his outing against the Nats.

"His ball has a lot of sink and depth," Renteria said Tuesday of the right-hander. "He works it to both sides. I thought he kept the ball down. I thought he was extremely composed in his outing with us, as was evidenced by the results. He kept us in the ballgame. ... He just showed a really good mound presence and good stuff."

Renteria hasn't seen Hendricks pitch since Spring Training, when the right-hander gave up three runs on five hits over eight innings in three outings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

"In the spring, what I remember is he's a command guy and he's got to execute pitches," Renteria said of Hendricks, who was 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 17 starts at Triple-A Iowa. "He's got a breaking ball, fastball with some depth, a four-seam fastball. He's kind of a taller gentleman who is known for commanding the zone, which I hope he will do here."
