Santana, Reynolds among leaders in ASG voting

Catcher, designated hitter rank third; online balloting runs through July 4

NEW YORK -- Indians catcher Carlos Santana boasts a blend of power and patience that has him in the running for his first All-Star appearance.

On Monday, when the first round of American League All-Star voting results was released, Santana ranked third in balloting among his peers. Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds also made the cut, ranking third in voting for the Junior Circuit's starting designated hitter.

Santana has been one of the league's standouts at his position in terms of extra-base and on-base ability. An example of his keen eye came on May 23, when the switch-hitting catcher drew four walks in a rout of the Red Sox.

"That was unbelievable," Indians manager Terry Francona said at the time. "We were talking about that in the dugout -- the guys were, too. I can't imagine doing that, having the patience. Because he swings almost violent, and he doesn't miss that much when he gets to two strikes. And he takes his walks and he swings at good pitches. It's amazing."

Entering Monday's action, Santana was hitting .283 with a .390 on-base percentage, a .489 slugging percentage, eight home runs, 13 doubles, 22 RBIs, 31 walks and 31 runs in 51 games. Among AL catchers, his .879 OPS was second to only Twins backstop Joe Mauer, who led the voting at catcher with 863,450. Santana (547,873) ranked third behind Mauer and Baltimore's Matt Wieters (715,055).
