Indians invite three players to Major League camp
The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent LHP SCOTT KAZMIR, RHP JERRY GIL and LHP EDWARD PAREDES to Minor League contracts with non-roster invitations to Major League camp.
Kazmir, 28, owns a career Major League pitching record of 66-61 with a 4.17ERA in 179 starts with the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels from 2004-2011. He was an American League All-Star in 2006 and 2008 and in 2007 he went 13-9 with a 3.48 ERA (9th-lowest in AL) in 34 starts for the Rays and led the American League in strikeouts with 239 (206.2IP). He made 1 start for the Los Angeles Angels in April 2011 and spent the 2012 season in the independent Atlantic League.
The 30-year old Gil appeared in 30 Major League games in 2004 and 2007 as a position player before being converted to the mound prior in 2008. He owns a career Minor League pitching record of 23-26 with 22 saves and a 5.63ERA in 205 games (18GS, 305.1IP, 324H, 191ER, 235K). He spent the 2012 season in the Toronto Blue Jays system at AAA Las Vegas (7-1, 9SV, 4.92ERA) and tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with 58 relief appearances. The Dominican Republic native recently posted a winter ball ERA of 1.52 in 24 games (8SV, 23.2IP, 19H, 4ER, .20K, .221AVG) for Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League.
Paredes, 26, pitched in the Seattle Mariners organization for seven seasons from 2005-11 and also recently completed a 24-game stint for Estrellas in the Dominican where he was 3-0 w/a 1.93 ERA (14.0IP, 8H, 3ER, 8BB, 10K, .186AVG) and limited left-handed hitters to a .174 (4-23) average.
