Infections lead to vertigo, DL stint for Cosart

MIAMI -- This past weekend, Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart was relieved to find out that his ailing right hamstring that caused him to exit his last start wasn't a serious issue.

Turns out the 24-year-old pitcher wasn't in the clear.

Cosart (1-3, 4.08 ERA) was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with vertigo, which stemmed from a recent ear infection. While he was scheduled to start Tuesday night against Arizona, Tom Koehler took his spot in the rotation and reliever Carter Capps, recalled from Triple A-New Orleans, replaced him on the 25-man roster.

"I had a sinus infection about a month ago and the doctor said things didn't fully go away, which probably led to my ears getting messed up," Cosart said. "Then I had the [ear] infection, which led to the vertigo. So I'm just taking it day by day and we'll see what happens."

Cosart began taking medicine for the vertigo Monday morning. He'll complete two days of no-activity and then see how his ailment feels.

"Hopefully in two days I'm good and can start throwing and I'll get the OK to start flying and pick up where we left off," he said.

Cosart has struggled in his past three outings, allowing 11 runs in 14 1/3 innings while collecting two losses. In his last start against the Dodgers last Wednesday, he surrendered four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings before exiting due to what turned out to be a right hamstring cramp.
