Segura day to day with hamstring strain

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers All-Star shortstop Jean Segura limped to the dugout with a strained right hamstring after scoring a run in the first inning Wednesday night against the Cubs, a setback with the potential to prematurely end his season given the late date.

The Brewers say Segura is day to day, but few days remain on the schedule. Beginning with Thursday's series finale against the Cubs, the Brewers have 11 games left.

"It's not bad, but saying that, we'll see how many days it's going to be," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "If he walks in here [Thursday] and he hardly feels anything, then we have a chance to get him back out there."

The 23-year-old Segura had been one of the few Brewers to avoid the injury bug this season. He worked a one-out walk from Cubs starter Chris Rusin and eventually scored from second base on an Aramis Ramirez single for a 1-0 Brewers lead, but he walked gingerly from home plate to the dugout, where he was tended to by head athletic trainer Dan Wright. After a few moments, Segura and Wright walked up the tunnel to the Brewers' clubhouse.

Jeff Bianchi took over at shortstop and has the best chance to start there Thursday as the Brewers seek a four-game sweep of the Cubs.

Segura is batting .296 with 12 home runs and 74 runs scored in 619 plate appearances, including just .245 with one home run since the All-Star break.

"[Segura] is one of the guys we talk about all the time about what we do with him and how much we go with him," Roenicke said. "That stuff [seeing him get injured] always bothers me."
