Red Sox hire Dipoto as temporary consultant
Former Angels general manager will help Boston plan for offseason moves
MIAMI -- The Red Sox have hired veteran evaluator Jerry Dipoto as a temporary consultant to help the club formulate a plan for the offseason.
MLB Network's Peter Gammons was first to report the news.
Dipoto resigned as the Angels' general manager in July after working in that post for nearly four years.
In his interim role with the Red Sox, Dipoto will help general manager Ben Cherington evaluate the talent within the organization and perhaps provide insight on potential trade targets and free agents.
"He's come in to review our system and our big league club," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "I know it's an objective view to be brought in and give feedback and information to Ben, and he'll give his assessment and recommendations going forward."
Dipoto's stay with the Red Sox will likely be for a few months, though no precise timetable has been given.
The interim hire of Dipoto comes a couple of weeks after Larry Lucchino announced he was stepping down as Red Sox president/CEO after the season. Sam Kennedy will take over for Lucchino as team president, but the Sox have yet to say how they will fill the CEO position.
Dipoto has history with Cherington and others within Boston's ownership group and front office, having served as a scout for the club in 2003 and '04.
