Girardi: I didn't know I'd been ejected vs. Mets

NEW YORK -- There have been more than a handful of occasions, Joe Girardi readily admits, where his temper has warranted an ejection. The only difference on Sunday was that the Yankees' manager didn't realize this was one of those times.

Girardi was thrown out by third-base umpire John Hirschbeck in the second inning of the Yankees' 11-2 Subway Series victory over the Mets for arguing about a checked-swing third strike called on Greg Bird. Girardi lingered in the dugout, unaware he had been tossed.

"He said he did. I never saw it," Girardi said. "I don't know if anyone else saw it. But I never did. So [Hirschbeck] came over in the third inning and said, 'What are you still doing here?' I said, 'What do you mean? You never threw me out.'

"He said, 'Yes, I did.' So I don't understand it."

The lineup card was handed over to bench coach Rob Thomson as Girard belatedly accepted his fourth ejection of the season and first since Aug. 20 vs. Cleveland.

Girardi said that his issue was as much with the call on Bird as Hirschbeck's reaction to the Yankees' bench -- television replays appeared to show the veteran umpire telling someone to "shut up."

"Well, our guys -- myself included -- clearly saw that Greg Bird didn't swing," Girardi said. "And we didn't like the call. I think you can read his lips, what he said to me, and I took offense to that."

Bird said that he didn't pay much attention to the ejection.

"My job's to worry about what I'm doing on the field," Bird said. "[Girardi] can take care of that. It's a bang-bang game, it's how it works. Quick decisions are made, and it's just how it goes sometimes. My job's not to worry about that, so, just go out there and keep playing ball and it'll take care of itself."
