Panik progressing slowly with back injury

Aoki fine, while Leake should return on time; Hudson throws in bullpen

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik, who has missed eight games with lower back stiffness, has yet to resume baseball activities and manager Bruce Bochy said he does not expect to have the 24-year-old back when eligible to come off the disabled list Monday.

"I don't see him being ready when his DL time is up," Bochy said.

Bochy said Panik has been able to do some light exercise and is making slight progress in his rehabilitation, but it seems the second baseman is not recovering as quickly as the Giants had hoped.

"He's working out, riding the bike, doing some things," Bochy said. "We're going to back him off this week and then he'll probably start taking some swings."

Panik was hitting .309 with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 97 games before the Giants placed him on the disabled list Aug. 3.

Nori Aoki, who left Sunday's contest after a Jake Arrieta cutter struck his helmet, said before Tuesday's game that he feels well enough to play. Bochy said he was giving Aoki another day of rest and that his left fielder would be available to substitute in the field, at the plate or on the basepaths Tuesday.

• Catcher Andrew Susac made his first rehab start Tuesday night with Class A Advanced San Jose as he works his way back from a sprained right thumb. He served as the designated hitter, tallying a single in the sixth inning.

• Newly acquired starting pitcher Mike Leake, nursing a left hamstring strain, threw "close to 30 pitches" in a bullpen Tuesday, Bochy said. The manager added Leake could "barely" feel tightness in his hamstring and expects him to return when eligible Aug. 18.

Tim Hudson threw a bullpen session Tuesday and Bochy said he is feeling good. Hudson is eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday, so it's possible he will make a start against the Nationals at the end of the week.
