Jay set to rehab at Triple-A this weekend
PHOENIX -- Of the Cardinals' seven players rehabbing an injury, outfielder Jon Jay will be the first to begin a rehab assignment with one of the organization's Minor League affiliates.
Jay, who has missed the team's last 51 games while strengthening his left wrist, is scheduled to meet up with the Triple-A Memphis club on Friday as it continues a road series in Reno, Nev. The Cardinals have not determined whether Jay will be in Friday's lineup or wait until the weekend to play. The team has also not projected how long the rehab assignment will last. With rosters set to expand on Tuesday, the Cardinals would not activate the center fielder before then.
Matt Adams, who has been working through a rehab program at the Cardinals' Florida complex for the last week, has not yet been cleared to begin a rehab assignment. Though Adams began taking batting practice several days before Jay, the first baseman had to prove more on the mobility side before taking another step in his rehab work. Adams is recovering from surgery to repair a tear in his right quadriceps, suffered on May 27.
Worth noting
• After spending some time at his Florida home, Matt Holliday (right quad strain) is expected back in St. Louis this weekend to be reevaluated. Holliday has been out since July 30.
• Randal Grichuk (right elbow strain) is doing some rehab work back in St. Louis but has still not resumed baseball activities.
• After starting each of the team's last 15 games, Yadier Molina was out of the lineup for Thursday's game against Arizona. Manager Mike Matheny acknowledged that Molina, who remains on pace to start a career-high 144 games behind the plate, "didn't fight" the day off.
• Three members of the Double-A Springfield roster -- outfielder Charlie Tilson, catcher Michael Ohlman and right-hander Arturo Reyes -- have been named to the 2015 Texas League Postseason All-Star Team. All three were also Midseason All-Stars in the Texas League this year.
Tilson entered Thursday ranking first in the league with 43 stolen bases, second with 143 hits and tied for third with 77 runs scored. Ohlman, who was acquired for cash in a February trade with the Orioles, has hit .281 with 11 homers and a team-best 62 RBIs. Since being promoted from Class A Advanced Palm Beach on May 1, Reyes is 7-7 with a 2.64 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 17 starts.
• The Cardinals' Class A Peoria affiliate clinched a spot in the Midwest League playoff on Thursday, ending the club's six-year postseason drought. Peoria entered Thursday with a 37-21 second-half record.
