Urena, Rienzo latest Marlins to go on DL

ATLANTA -- As injuries pile up, fresh opportunities keep arising for Marlins pitchers. On Friday, right-handers Jose Urena and Andre Rienzo were placed on the disabled list.

In corresponding moves, Kendry Flores was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans and Kyle Barraclough had his contract selected from Double-A Jacksonville. The right-handers join a pitching staff that has been in flux since Mat Latos and Dan Haren were dealt prior to the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.

Urena, who started in Miami's 9-8 loss to the Braves on Thursday, was struck with a line drive on his left knee in the second inning. Although he completed the frame, Urena exited the following inning, and the club placed him on the DL with a knee contusion.

The injury occurred when Urena was pegged by a sharp liner off the bat of Daniel Castro. He allowed three runs in the inning, and five total in two innings.

Rienzo, who has been used in long relief, is being sidelined with a left knee laceration that he incurred on a collision at home plate with Yoenis Cespedes of the Mets in a 12-1 loss on Monday. His DL stint is retroactive to Tuesday. He has stitches on his left knee.

Flores, acquired last December from the Giants as part of the Casey McGehee deal, has been one of Miami's most promising young pitchers and is ranked by MLB.com as the Marlins' No. 6 prospect. The right-hander has a combined 6-5 record with a 2.34 ERA in 115 1/3 innings. He's pitched at Jacksonville and New Orleans, where he last started on Tuesday.

"The ball that hit off of Jose's knee, it got him pretty good," manager Dan Jennings said. "There's quite a bit of swelling there today. So instead of leaving us exposed, we felt the need to call up two pitchers so that we could cover the spot."

Jennings added the Marlins are leaning toward going with rookie lefty Adam Conley to fill Urena's rotation spot on Wednesday against the Red Sox.

"There's quite a few gentlemen who are here or about to be here between now and the end of the season that are going to make some starts," Jennings said.

Flores is another candidate. But for now, he will pitch in relief.

The 23-year-old is back in the big leagues for the second time. Miami used him in relief on June 6 and June 8 before optioning him to New Orleans on June 12.

Barraclough, a hard-throwing right-hander, was acquired from the Cardinals on July 24 for reliever Steve Cishek.

Barraclough is being called up to the big leagues for the first time. In four appearances with the Suns since the trade, the right-hander has struck out nine and walked one in four scoreless innings.
