Urena could keep rotation job for a while

MIAMI -- Injuries in the Marlins' rotation created an opening for Jose Urena. But now that some starters are returning from the disabled list, it may be tough to get the rookie right-hander out of the starting five.

Miami's No. 2-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, Urena gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings on Friday night and collected his first big league win in the Marlins' 5-1 victory over the Rockies.

The lone run Urena allowed came via a Carlos Gonzalez opposite-field home run with one out in the seventh inning.

After retiring Nolan Arenado on a ground ball to third, Urena's night was over after 81 pitches. The rookie exited to a big ovation.

"It's a great feeling. It's hard to describe," Urena said. "It's what every pitcher goes out there looking to accomplish. It's a great atmosphere when you can exit the game and you see the crowd cheering for you, especially after it's your first win. Just a great night overall."

Miami manager Dan Jennings didn't rule out keeping Urena in the rotation.

Mat Latos has been reinstated from the disabled list and will start on Saturday vs. Colorado.

Miami also is weighing when to reinstate Jarred Cosart, who threw a rehab-assignment game on Thursday at Triple-A. And Jose Fernandez, who threw his second rehab start at Class A Jupiter on Friday, is about three weeks from returning.

Urena, meanwhile, continues to improve. He is 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA in six games, four of them starts. But in his last three starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.41 ERA -- five runs allowed in 18 2/3 innings.

"He has earned our confidence and earned the right to go as deep in the game as he can," Jennings said. "When you see that out of a young player and watch his confidence grow and the way he competes, he's earned the right. So we'll let him go as long as we need to."

How long will Urena stay in the rotation?

"We'll cross that bridge when we get there," Jennings said. "Latos will go tomorrow. Cosart had a nice outing last night, and from what I'm told, Jose did a nice job. Right now Urena is in that rotation and somebody will have to knock him out. But he's earned that right to get that opportunity every fifth day."
