Crawford, Sandberg among top 10 prospect performers Friday

A trio of future Phillies made their mark on the Minor Leagues Friday night, including the team's No. 1 prospect J.P. Crawford.

The 2015 All-Star Futures game selection and baseball's No. 16 overall prospect led off the second game of a doubleheader with a solo home run that would prove to be the winning margin in Double-A Reading's 4-3 victory over Akron. The shot was his second of the season as a Fightin Phil and first since June 7. Crawford has shown a steady bat -- .291/.400/.436 -- since his promotion in late May and has eight doubles and 20 walks in 26 contests.

The star of the night was No. 13 prospect Cord Sandberg, who unleashed a grand slam for Class A Lakewood. The left fielder's strength at the plate has remained mostly under wraps this season, but he stepped up in the third inning to launch his second dinger of the year and give the Blue Claws a lead they would not relinquish in a 6-3 win.

On the mound, No. 16 prospect Victor Arano proved why he was worth acquiring from the Dodgers last August, scattering four hits over seven shutout innings for Class A Advanced Clearwater. The win was Arano's first in 11 tries this season, although he has given up three earned runs or less in seven starts this year. He moves to 1-7 with a 5.25 ERA after striking out three and walking none.

• Astros No. 12 prospect A.J. Reed inched a bit closer to tying the Minor League home run leader by launching his 19th of the season. While the Class A Advanced Lancaster slugger still trails Double-A Chattanooga's Adam Brett Walker by one dinger, he is no longer second in RBIs. Reed moved into first place by notching his 67th and 68th of the season on a two-run dinger against Bakersfield. His line is one of the best you'll see this season in the Minors: .336/.441/.612 with 14 doubles, three triples and 50 walks, along with his 19 homers and 68 RBIs.

• Astros prospect Alex Bregman, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 Draft, played in his first pro game and collected his first pro hit for the Class A Quad Cities River Bandits. Bregman hit the field in eastern Iowa a little more than 24 hours after being introduced to the media at Houston's Minute Maid Park and then made good contact against the Kernels, lining out three times before picking up his lone single in a 1-for-5 night. Thursday night, he hung out with No. 2 overall prospect Carlos Correa before the Astros game. "He'll be here one day," Correa told MLB.com. "Just showing him how we do it and the fun we have doing it."

• Indians No. 2 prospect (No. 43 overall) Clint Frazier hit his eighth homer of the year for Class A Advanced Lynchburg. The center fielder went 2-for-4 with a solo shot and has hit in five of his past six games for the Hillcats. Frazier has been a force at the plate this year. He's racked up 18 doubles and 36 RBIs thus far this season.

• Marlins No. 11 prospect Kendry Flores picked up his first win for Triple-A New Orleans. The Dominican right-hander gave up just two hits in seven shutout innings, moving his class record to 1-0 and cutting his ERA from 4.50 to 2.65. Friday marked Flores' third start for the Zephyrs after tossing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the big league club earlier this month.

• Mets No. 7 prospect Dominic Smith tied a career high with four hits. The Class A Advanced St. Lucie first baseman went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs Friday, pushing his season line to .305/.346/.431 with 24 two-baggers, two homers and 46 RBIs. He's been quite hot since June 13, collecting four games of at least three hits in that time, while also recording 13 RBIs.

• Twins No. 2 prospect (No. 10 overall) Miguel Sano smacked three doubles for Double-A Chattanooga, tying a career high. He's been red hot over the past three contests, going 5-for-13 with three doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Friday marked the fourth time he's collected three hits in a game this season and the third baseman now has 16 doubles to go with 14 homers and 44 RBIs.

• Yankees No. 1 prospect (No. 17 overall) Luis Severino continued a dominant stretch for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by blanking Buffalo in seven innings of work Friday night. Severino scattered three hits while striking out six and has not given up an earned run in his past two starts (14 2/3 innings). Since his promotion on May 31, the Dominican hurler has not allowed more than two runs in any of his six starts and while he received a no-decision on Friday, he's still undefeated (3-0) for the RailRiders.
