Marichal enthused about Strickland's potential

Giants legend thinks youngster can develop into premier reliever

SAN FRANCISCO -- Juan Marichal, who knows a thing or two about pitching, believes that Giants rookie right-hander Hunter Strickland can develop into a premier reliever.

Marichal, the Hall of Fame right-hander who was in town this weekend for promotional activities, brought up Strickland's name without prompting in a conversation with an MLB.com reporter.

"I love that fastball he has," Marichal said. "If he learns how to spot that fastball, he's going to be untouchable. That kid has everything you need to be a great pitcher."

Strickland felt humbled when told of Marichal's remarks.

"He did a lot in his career. I have a lot of respect for him. I'm very honored," Strickland said. Developing the fastball command Marichal described, said Strickland, "is something I have to continue to do."
