Johnson sits out finale with back spasms

DETROIT -- There was a late change to the Rays' lineup on Thursday against the Tigers, as Kelly Johnson was scratched from the leadoff spot with back spasms and was replaced by Sam Fuld.

Johnson experienced the spasms Thursday morning and let the team know a few hours before the game, but after the original lineup had been posted.

Fuld played left field on Thursday. Johnson was available to pinch-hit.

"He still is a little bit stiff today," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It was not really wise to start and then have to take him out. We could [play] him later, if necessary."

But Maddon said he wasn't worried about it becoming an issue.

"It's not lingering," Maddon said. "It's just a little back stiffness. Once we get by that, we'll be fine."
