Herrera, Davis thrilled for All-Star opportunity

KANSAS CITY -- Soon after Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera was told by manager Ned Yost that he had been picked for this year's All-Star Game, he called his mother, Maria, in the Dominican Republic.

"Momma, get ready," Herrera said. "Going to Cincinnati on Sunday."

Maria didn't make the connection.

"Oh, you're going to the Futures Game again?" she asked.

Herrera laughed and said, "No, mama, this is the real game now."

To be fair, Herrera himself was somewhat in disbelief when he got the news Monday.

"I was sitting right here, and I just can't believe it," Herrera said. "I'm so proud right now, to represent the Royals organization and Kansas City."

Herrera got the news along with fellow reliever Wade Davis, who was voted in by the players. Herrera was a manager's pick.

"I was excited," Davis said. "I knew there was a chance of it happening, so I was excited to hear it. And Kelvin getting in there, too, that was pretty cool to see his reaction."

The Royals also will have four starters picked by the fans -- catcher Salvador Perez, shortstop Alcides Escobar and outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon.

"I'm happy to be around all the five guys," Herrera said. "It'll be like a normal game for us, pretty much."

And Kansas City could add a seventh -- third baseman Mike Moustakas was one of the five players on the American League Final Vote.

During the Midsummer Classic in Cincinnati on Tuesday, July 14, fans can once again visit MLB.com to submit their choice for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. Voting exclusively at MLB.com, online and via their mobile devices in the 2015 All-Star Game MVP Vote presented by Chevrolet, the fans' collective voice will represent 20 percent of the overall vote that determines the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.
