Mets to call up Plawecki, 3 others

NEW YORK -- A quartet of familiar faces will be among the Mets' first wave of September callups Tuesday. The Mets on Sunday informed catcher Kevin Plawecki, infielder Eric Campbell, and outfielders Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Eric Young that they will be recalled as soon as rosters expand Sept. 1.

Plawecki, 24, figures to see the most playing time of the bunch, and is the best bet to land on New York's playoff roster. He spent 62 games with the Mets earlier this season, batting .228 with two home runs, and gives the Mets a backup catcher alternative to Anthony Recker.

Young, 30, is perhaps the most intriguing bubble candidate for the playoff roster. A former Met who the team re-acquired last weekend, Young led the National League with 46 stolen bases in 2013. The Mets will use him as a pinch-runner in September, with an eye toward potentially doing the same in October.

Nieuwenhuis and Campbell, both 28, give the Mets pinch-hitting options from the left and right sides of the plate, respectively. The former hit .203 in 87 plate appearances with the Mets this year, with all three of his home runs coming in a single game. The latter hit .179 with three home runs in 187 plate appearances.

In addition to those four, the Mets have said that pitchers Bobby Parnell and Steven Matz will come off the disabled list as soon as rosters expand. Fellow reliever Erik Goeddel will also return from the DL perhaps as soon as Tuesday, while left-hander Dario Alvarez is eligible for a promotion beginning Thursday. Add in the eventual returns of Lucas Duda from the DL and Logan Verrett from Triple-A Las Vegas, where the team optioned him Sunday, and the Mets should spend most of September with at least 35 players in their clubhouse.
