Uehara's run of success vs. Trout takes detour

ANAHEIM -- As soon as the ball left Mike Trout's bat, Koji Uehara's body language said it all. He immediately looked down at the ground and began walking off the mound. He didn't need to see the ball to know where it went.

The Red Sox's closer took the hill in the ninth inning of Friday night's game to face the top of the Angels' order. After recording two quick outs, the game ended with Trout depositing a home run over the center-field wall and the Red Sox taking a 1-0 loss. Trout came into the at-bat 0-for-5 vs. Uehara with three strikeouts.

"We were trying to go down and away, and it just leaks back over the plate a little bit. He is such a good low-ball hitter," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Trout. "He got him this time."

Farrell chose to go with Uehara, who had thrown 10 straight scoreless appearances, even though it was a 0-0 game.

"Given his success against those guys and that part of the lineup, even though it is a handful of at-bats," Farrell said. "It felt like that was going to be the game. We went to our guy that has been so successful."

While Uehara was surprised to be coming into a tied game, he felt like he had a good game plan on how to approach Trout.

"I was trying to go a little bit more outside on the pitch," Uehara said through a translator. "I knew that I had a good record against him, but he just had a good at-bat against me today."
