Angels officially add Smith, designate Gutierrez

Free agent right-hander passes physical to finalize three-year contract

ANAHEIM -- The Angels designated right-hander Juan Gutierrez for assignment on Wednesday to make room for reliever Joe Smith, whose signing was officially announced.

Gutierrez, 30, had a 5.19 ERA in 28 appearances for the Angels in 2013 after being claimed off waivers from Kansas City. He would have been eligible for salary arbitration in 2014, if he had remained on the roster.

Smith, 29, agreed last week to a three-year, $15 million contract and passed his physical exam Wednesday.

Smith was taken by the Mets in the third round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft and has compiled a 2.97 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP and a 1.97 strikeout-to-walk ratio in seven big league seasons. He's averaged 71 appearances over the past three seasons.

The Angels' Major League roster is full at 40.
