Lightheadedness has Avila on the bench

MINNEAPOLIS -- Alex Avila was out of the lineup for a second consecutive game on Tuesday, and he's likely to remain so until at least Friday's series opener at Kansas City after the lightheadedness that bothered him on Sunday returned on Tuesday.

At this point Avila is in much the same situation he was two weeks ago: He won't play until he has a day free of concussion-type symptoms.

"Alex did some baseball activity today and felt a little bit lightheaded," manager Brad Ausmus said on Tuesday afternoon, "so he's going to be off, and continue to be day to day until we get through a day where he does activity and doesn't have any side effects."

The Tigers were hoping that Sunday's episode was isolated and wanted to ramp up his activity and see how he felt to make sure. The return of the symptoms has to be a worrisome development after Avila missed three games with concussion symptoms earlier this month.

At the time, Ausmus said, Avila did not show the typical signs.
