Scioscia hopes to keep Roth in organization

ANAHEIM -- A little more than a year ago, Angels left-hander Michael Roth won his Major League debut in relief against Houston.

He went into that game with 22 innings of Rookie ball experience in 2012, plus one Double-A start in 2013.

On Sunday, the Angels designated Roth, 24, for assignment to clear 40-man roster room for the latest prodigy, right-handed reliever Mike Morin, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Manager Mike Scioscia said he hopes the club is able to keep Roth -- who struggled in Double-A this season -- in the organization.

"He's a young guy who needs to make adjustments," Scioscia said of Roth, who was 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA in 20 Major League innings last season. "They've been slow in coming.

"We certainly hope he's still with us [after the 10-day DFA window]. He has incredible makeup. He competes great. He's shown flashes [of big league ability], but at times he's not able to make the pitches he needs to make."

Roth was the Angels' ninth-round pick out of South Carolina in 2012 after the Gamecocks reached three straight College World Series championship games, winning the title in '10 and '11. Roth started the first two title-deciding games.
