Gibbons tossed after Blue Jays lose challenge

TORONTO -- Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was ejected for the first time this season following an exchange with home-plate umpire Mark Carlson in the fifth inning of Sunday's afternoon game against the A's.

Edwin Encarnacion hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball to shallow center. As Oakland center fielder Craig Gentry, shortstop Jed Lowrie and second baseman Alberto Callaspo converged on the ball, it dropped in, allowing Melky Cabrera to advance to third. Jose Bautista, who held up on the fly ball, was thrown out on a force play at second after pitcher Jim Johnson alertly covered the base, prompting a manager's challenge from Gibbons.

"I was looking up at the board and it looked pretty obvious to me," Gibbons said. "I didn't think there was any doubt to that one."

After a two-minute, 24-second review, the ruling on the field would stand. Gibbons then paid a visit to Carlson, voiced his displeasure at the ruling, and after a brief exchange, was ejected from the game.

Following the game, Gibbons said he did not agree with the call.

"I guess it's a good system, but it's not a perfect system," Gibbons said. "But that was a big play right there. We're sitting pretty good out there, if he's safe at second base with a chance to blow the game open. Of course the out call changes the whole complexity [of the situation], and if we're in a tight game, we've got a pretty good offense that can strike quick. So I thought that was a big play, and they got it wrong."
