Collins leaves Mets camp after father's passing

Mets manager Terry Collins has left camp to return to Midland, Mich., after the death of his father, according to multiple reports out of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The 95-year-old Loren "Bud" Collins died at his Midland home -- he was a longtime employee of Dow Chemical there -- on Tuesday night, according to the Midland Daily News. The New York Daily News reported that Collins spent most of the winter with his father as his health deteriorated.

According to the New York Daily News report, there is no timetable set for Collins to return to Mets camp, and general manager Sandy Alderson will fill in for Collins during the standard news conference to mark the beginning of camp on Friday. Pitchers and catchers officially report on Thursday.
