Mariners add four players from AAA Tacoma

LHP Charlie Furbush Transferred to 60-day Disabled List; Dan Wilson will join coaching staff for remainder of homestand.

The Seattle Mariners announced the following roster moves prior to tonight's game vs. the Texas Rangers. Jeff Kingston, the Mariners Assistant General Manager, made the announcement.

  • James Jones, OF, recalled from AAA Tacoma
  • Jesus Montero, 1B/DH, recalled from AAA Tacoma
  • Steven Baron (#10), C, selected from AAA Tacoma
  • JC Ramirez (#56), RHP, selected from AAA Tacoma
  • Charlie Furbush, LHP, transferred to 60-day disabled list (left biceps tendinitis)

With these roster moves, the Mariners 40-man roster is now full at 40 players. All players will be active for tonight's 7:10 pm game vs. the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field.

Jones, 26, will join Seattle for his third stint this season. In 8 MLB games this season, and was 0-for-12 with 6 strikeouts and 1 stolen base. Jones hit .286 (78x273) with 51 runs, 13 doubles, 8 triples, 2 home runs, 33 RBI and 27 steals in 75 games with the Rainiers. In his Major League career (116 games), Jones has stolen 28 bases in 29 attempts.

Montero, 25, will join the Mariners for his third stint this season. In 25 games with Seattle this season, he hit .200 (15x75) with 5 runs, 5 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 RBI. In his first 14 games with the Mariners, he hit .325 (13x40) with 4 runs, 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 RBI; in his last 11 games, he hit .057 (2x35) with 1 double. In 98 games with AAA Tacoma, he hit .355 (140x394) with 70 runs, 18 doubles, 6 triples, 18 home runs and 85 RBI with a .966 OPS. In 5 September games, since being optioned to Tacoma, he hit .555 (10x18) with 6 runs, 1 double, 2 home runs and 10 RBI.

Ramirez, 26, will be making his Mariners debut in his first appearance. He was acquired by Seattle from the Arizona organization on July 27, 2015. In 14 relief appearances with Tacoma, he was 1-1, 2.50 (5 ER, 18.0 IP), and struck out 18. He appeared in 23 games with AAA Reno (0-1, 2.88) and made 12 appearances with the Diamondbacks and was 1-1, 4.11 (7 ER, 15.1 IP). He has also appeared in the Majors with Philadelphia, pitching in 18 games in 2013.

Ramirez was originally signed by Seattle July 2, 2005 as a non-drafted free agent. He was traded to Philadelphia as part of the three-team, eight player Cliff Lee deal on Dec. 16, 2009.

Baron, 24, will be making his Major League debut when he appears in a game with the Mariners. In 88 combined games with AA Jackson (April 9-June 2) and AAA Tacoma (June 3-Sept. 7), Baron hit .265 (77x291) with 44 runs scored, 17 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 33 RBI. He made 82 starts at catcher, throwing out 20 of 72 attempted base stealers (27.7%).

The Miami native was originally selected by the Mariners in the supplemental first round (33rd overall) in the 2009 June Draft out of John A. Ferguson High School. In 7 minor leagues seasons in the Mariners organization he has combined to throw out 42.8% of attempted base stealers (242 of 565).

Furbush, 29, was placed on the 15-day disabled list July 9 (retro to July 8) with left biceps tendinitis. An MRI exam on Aug. 20 revealed a small tear in his left rotator cuff. He is on a rehabilitation program is not scheduled for any surgery at this time.

Dan Wilson is in his second season as the Mariners Minor League Catching Coordinator. He will join the staff as an extra coach for the remainder of this homestand.
